Substance abuse refers the dependence on and repeated use of injurious or harmful substance like alcohol, cocaine, heroin and other prescribed illegal drugs. It is used for the purpose of altering the mood but gradually it leads towards dependence syndrome. Dependence syndrome is a psychological phenomenon develops the tendency of excessive substance abuse (drugs or alcohol). Consequently, addicted people engender strong desire to use the drugs/alcohol repeatedly in spite of knowing it that it is dangerous for their health.

Nevertheless, thanks to substance abuse treatment centers who provide effective programs. The general objectives of these programs are to stop substance abuse and assist in keeping away from the psychological, financial, social, physical, and legal consequences because it is root cause of abnormal and dangerous life. The policies used by these treatment centers for removal of disorder are helpful and make effort towards the re-establishment of normal life in affected persons.

Substance abuse is influential addiction that does not quit without external help and strong internal desire. Another noticeable point is – the relapse rates are high; hence, the substance abuse counselors expertise themselves to tackle the issue carefully. These sorts of treatment are basically dependent upon personal counseling and behavioral therapy. However, one of the best methods is client-centered approach, under which patients have been given unconditional positive regards with full empathy. The responsibility of substance abuse counselors is in demand because they endow with a remarkable contribution for community’s welfare.

By countering the complicacies of the problems, there are various methodologies have been developed for the treatment of substance abuse patients but first of all it is necessary to target the problems for the accurate treatment. However as per requirement, the alcohol abuse treatment programs and drug abuse treatment programs are equally beneficial for the treatments.

It is difficult to make a decision to seek treatment for alcohol abuse, dependency, or addiction. But having made that choice it becomes even more confusing when seeking an appropriate type of program. Essentially the first decision comes down to opting for either Inpatient or Out-Patient.

First consider In-Patient, commonly referred to as “Residential.” Generally these programs run from 30 to 90 days at an average cost of $1000/day, though some may run three or four times that amount. Usually the client is confined to a facility, shielded from outside pressures, assessed, counseled, and released to aftercare which usually consists of weekly groups at a hospital, clinic, or other local facility and the mandate “don’t drink, attend AA, work your program.”

The benefits are fairly straightforward: removal from immediate stressers; isolation from temptation; appeasement of family and employers; time to regroup and collect one’s thoughts; and a period away from the usual alcoholic fog.

The drawbacks are equally apparent: expense; disconnection from reality; labeling; depression; and re-entry shock which generally leads to relapse within a month or two and a return to old behaviors which will now necessitate out-patient services if you can can afford them either financially or emotionally.

Out-patient, on the otherhand, allows the client to gradually modify behaviors within the ongoing context of their daily life. It also provides assessment and counseling and followup, but with continuity of program, staff, and facility.

The drawback is that the client isn’t isolated or protected from their usual stresses and temptations. But is this really a negative point?

Nearly anyone can modify a behavior in a controlled environment for a short period of time. People do lose weight at spas; they get into shape at camps; they quit drinking in rehab. But they almost always return to their old patterns when they return to their usual lives and problems, people and jobs, neighborhoods and families. All that has changed is that they’ve had a very expensive vacation.

The harsh reality is that change takes place within the individual in their usual surroundings, or it doesn’t last for long. That said, Out-Patient treatment is more effective because it works with all of the day-to-day problems that must be coped with. It’s cheaper, and you can always stay at a hotel for awhile if you need to escape long enough to clear your head and develop some plans. It’s more inclusive, again because it is done within the context of your real life. It’s also less prone to labeling you with a permanent diagnosis which may or may not be accurate and is usually demeaning.

Finally, modifying behaviors over time is more apt to result in lasting change. It takes time to alter behavior, thirty days to break a habit and a year or more to replace the activity. If you want to succeed, expect to give yourself the time you deserve in the most efficient ways available.

The benefits are fairly straightforward: removel from immediate stressers; isolation from temptation; appeasement of family and employers; time to regroup and collect one’s thoughts; and a period away from the usual alcoholic fog.

It’s cheaper, but you can always stay at a hotel for awhile if you need to escape long enough to clear your head and develop some plans. It’s more inclusive, again because it is done within the context of your real life. It’s also less prone to labeling you with a permanent diagnosis which may or may not be accurate and is usually demeaning.

Finally, modifying behaviors over time is more apt to result in lasting change. It takes time to alter behavior, usually about thirty days to break a habit and a year or more to replace the activity. If you want to succeed, expect to give yourself the time you deserve in the most efficient ways available.

Although seniors represent greater risk for substance abuse, they are seriously underrepresented in treatment programs; for a number of reasons as senior alcohol treatment is as important as the treatment for other age groups.

Seniors self report feeling shame and guilt for abuse behaviors, and will very rarely initiate treatment on their own. They are also less likely to get noticed for their alcohol drinking problem and less likely to have problems with work or the law; basically, they generally drink in the home, and in secret places where no one notice them or catch them.

Family is also often reluctant to intervene in the drinking habits of the adults or say seniors. Too many otherwise concerned and caring family members do not intervene even when the reality of a problem is clear to all of them thinking that it could hurt their seniors and loved ones. Many people mistakenly believe that they do a kindness by allowing seniors their “comfort” of intoxication and they forget that they themselves allowing their seniors to follow a life threatening path where their life could be a hell instead of comfort zone. They may also feel embarrassment or may be unsure about treatment options at such a late stage in life for seniors.

The reality is by not intervening you rob them of a chance for a better life as the seniors are also a part of our growing society. You actually by agreeing or by not stopping them are letting them to a shortened lifespan, to greater health problems, to greater cognitive impairments and to more psychiatric distress. Allowing someone to continue with drug or alcohol abuse is never a kindness.

Older adults and seniors do remarkably well in treatment when they do get help from their loved ones. They are far more likely to finish initiated therapies, and maintain a full participation in aftercare, and have a better than average success rate of abstinence. Therefore by understanding the importance of addiction treatment of our seniors we can prevent them going to a wrong way and help them live a more comfortable life.
