Why should a woman stop drinking alcohol or undergo alcohol treatment first before deciding to get pregnant?

One of my closest girl friends married last month and promptly expressed her desired to have a baby. I am bothered because she’s an alcoholic, though she doesn’t want to admit it. When I advised her to undergo treatment first, she just fired back another question to me.
